The final stage of development has been completed at logistics firm Ascott Transport Limited’s (ATL) Midlands Hub in Foston, Derbyshire.
The development was spilt into two phases and represented an ‘eight-figure’ investment.
The first phase of development saw the construction of ‘a 190,000ft² high-bay warehouse, three-storey gatehouse, high-spec offices, workshop, outside storage and parking facilities’. The recently-completed second phase included the development of ‘a new 127,000ft² warehouse with 14 loading bays, offices, welfare rooms and external concrete yards and roads’.
Contractor G F Tomlinson said that the first phase allowed ATL to ‘almost double its Midlands operating capacity’, with the addition of a new warehouse further expanding the company’s operating capacity. It is hoped that the new facility will ‘enable ATL to meet increased demand from both new and existing clients as part of its strategic expansion plans’.
Pete Ascott, Managing Director of ATL, explained: “The second phase adds a further 21,000 pallet storage capacity to our portfolio so now, with the development complete, we can begin our extensive growth plans and support our clients with industry leading quality warehousing space.”
GF Tomlinson has highlighted the warehouse’s internal floor as a particular ‘technological innovation’, designed and constructed with no joints in order to ‘facilitate the smooth movement of semi- and fully-automated materials handling equipment throughout the warehouse’.

Sustainability features at the site include photovoltaic (PV) panels which – according to G F Tomlinson – ‘will generate enough solar power to sufficiently supply the warehouse’s energy requirements and its recent investment into electric trucks’, as well as walls and a roof measuring 400mm thick ‘to create a thermally stable warehouse and increased insulation to the office areas’.
