FedEx has announced plans to scale its e-commerce fulfilment offering in North America through a strategic alliance and investment in Nimble, an artificial intelligence robotics and autonomous technology company.
The investment amount was not disclosed.
The alliance allows FedEx to use Nimble’s fulfilment centres in North America as it looks to attract more e-commerce merchants.
This will enable expansion for FedEx Fulfillment, which is geared toward order fulfilment and inventory management for small- and medium-sized businesses.
Nimble has six fulfilment centres already open or planning to launch by next year in the USA and Mexico, according to its website.
Its facilities feature the company’s robotic systems that autonomously pick, pack and handle products for brands selling apparel, footwear, electronics and other products.
“Nimble’s cutting-edge AI robotics and autonomous fulfilment systems will help FedEx streamline operations and unlock new opportunities for our customers,” said Scott Temple, president of FedEx Supply Chain, which FedEx Fulfillment is part of.
Simon Kalouche, founder and CEO of Nimble, added: “We’re thrilled to be engaging in this multifaceted alliance with a logistics industry leader like FedEx to pioneer and scale autonomous fulfilment.
“This collaboration will help enable FedEx to leverage Nimble’s fast and cost-effective fulfilment centres, powered by our next-generation intelligent general purpose warehouse robots and AI technology.”
