Greggs, a UK food-on-the-go retailer, has unveiled plans to bolster its supply chain with a ‘state-of-the-art frozen production and logistics facility’ in Derby.
This move aligns with Greggs’ expansive growth plan, announced in 2021, which aims to significantly increase its footprint across the UK.
With 2,500 shops already in operation as of May 2024, Greggs is on track to open an additional 140-160 stores by the end of the year. The long-term vision is to have over 3,000 shops nationwide.
The new logistics facility will be situated at the SmartParc SEGRO Derby in Spondon, occupying a sprawling 23-acre plot. Following the landlord’s construction, Greggs will outfit the site with advanced manufacturing and logistics equipment designed to maximise operational efficiency. The site is expected to commence operations in late 2026, creating up to 600 new jobs in the process.
This purpose-built facility will reportedly feature new savoury and sweet production lines, advanced logistics for frozen storage and fully automated robotic shop order picking and distribution solutions provided by Swisslog. Additionally, the facility will be designed to accommodate future business growth and innovation, with capacity for at least five manufacturing platforms and the flexibility to commission new production lines to meet rising demand.
The site will also boast an onsite shared energy centre, utilising a centralised heating and cooling system that recycles heat from refrigeration plants across the estate. Other green features include a rainwater harvesting system, photovoltaic panels, electric vehicle charging points and secure bike storage, all aimed at reducing local emissions.
Roisin Currie, chief executive at Greggs, expressed enthusiasm about the new development: “We are delighted to announce our new state-of-the-art facility at SmartParc SEGRO Derby. This purpose-built site offers significant flexibility to add new capabilities and lines as our business evolves. This is a significant step in our supply chain investment and will provide much-needed manufacturing and logistics support to power our ambitious growth plans.”
Jackie Wild, CEO at SmartParc, shared: “It is our ultimate vision that SmartParc SEGRO Derby becomes a hub for forward-thinking food businesses seeking sustainable and efficient operations, a collaborative workspace and a first-class location with excellent connectivity, while also prioritising their people. Greggs embodies this approach, and we are immensely proud to welcome such a cherished food business to the site.”
