Midwest Transport Inc. (MTI), a trucking and logistics company based in Robinson, Illinois, has reportedly notified over 650 employees, including more than 480 drivers, that it is ceasing operations.
Truck drivers for the company told FreightWaves that they had received telephone calls from their regional managers late on 5 September 2024, notifying them that the firm was winding down operations.
At the time of publication, no official statement has been made by MTI.
MTI describes itself on its website as ‘one of the largest transportation contractors in association with the United States Postal Service (USPS)’. Outside of Illinois, it operated key terminals in Pennsylvania, Florida and Tennessee.
FreightWaves claims to have seen an email sent to MTI drivers and employees which confirmed that the firm would complete ‘all trips through the trips that began on 8 September’.
This email also reportedly noted that ‘terminal and office personnel will receive information and updates from [their] managers as [the company] progresses through this transition’.
This is not the first trucking company in North America to wind down operations recently. In August 2023, US-based less-than-truckload carrier Yellow Corporation filed for bankruptcy as the company prepared for its ‘planned operational wind-down’.
Transporting shipments for major US brands including Walmart and Home Depot, Yellow had been operating for almost a century before its closure.
Then earlier this year, Ontario-based truckload carrier Pride Group filed for creditor protection. However, in an update on 15 August 2024, it was announced that Pride Group ‘has sufficient liquidity to continue to operate and it is business as usual’.
