The Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have reported system outages as a result of a ‘possible cyberattack’.
On 24 August 2024, the official X account of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport posted the following statement: “Earlier this morning the Port of Seattle experienced certain system outages indicating a possible cyberattack.
“The Port isolated critical systems and is in the process of working to restore full service and do not have an estimated time for return.
“We are working closely with appropriate authorities and partners to help travellers who may be impacted.”
The latest update provided by Washington Ports on 27 August stated: “Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is making progress on restoring the previously impacted elements of the baggage system. Multiple teams have implemented and are using a variety of methods to ensure bags reach their aircraft. Travellers should continue to prioritise carry-on luggage if possible.”
It also confirmed that the updates have been posted on the Washington Ports website as a result of the Port of Seattle / Seattle-Tacoma International Airport website going down as part of the system outages.
In a press conference on 26 August, confirmed that while cruise ship operations “are operating as normal” at the port, the Port of Seattle maritime phone systems are also down as part of the system outage.
Reports claim that the FBI is aware of the incident and is working with its partners to determine what happened.
