Automotive manufacturer Renault Group has partnered with industrial robotics company Exotec to create a 100% automated facility at its site in Villeroy, which it claims is a ‘world-first’ for car manufacturers.
Renault Group’s Villeroy Parts and Accessories Logistics Department site leverages Exotec’s Skypod robots to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
The Skypod robots, which are capable of picking items at height, have significantly reduced the risk of falls for operators, the companies said in a statement.
What’s more, system installation has reportedly reduced parts order preparation time sixfold and decreased the storage area footprint.
“We are proud to collaborate with Exotec, positioning our Villeroy site at the forefront of innovation,” said Xavier Lhors, director of after-sales logistics at Renault Group.
Lhors continued: “This solution, coupled with our dedicated teams, allows us to increase orders by 25%, reinforcing our commitment to customer satisfaction.”
Thomas Genestar, managing director Western Europe, Exotec, added: “Our collaboration with Renault Group merges the expertise of a national automotive leader with Exotec’s cutting-edge robotics.
“Our Skypod system’s flexibility and agility meet the complex needs of the automotive sector, enhancing operational comfort and efficiency.”
Exotec’s logistics solution was designed to adapt to fluctuating production demands, adding storage modules, robots and modifying conveyors in real time.
The autonomous robots, equipped with advanced navigation and handling capabilities, operate efficiently in complex environments, Exotec added.
Currently, 191 robots perform various tasks at the Villeroy site, including picking, inventory and put-away, offering a scalable solution for managing product flows.
The automated system encompasses three main steps: injection, picking and shipping.
The introduction of automation has apparently improved working conditions and operator safety while also cutting delivery times and energy consumption by 30%. At peak, the site can prepare nearly 4,000 order lines per hour, processing up to 40,000 order lines daily.
Renault’s Villeroy site supports both new and older vehicle models and provides service for maintenance and repair needs.
