In a resounding declaration during National Apprenticeship Week [between 5 to 11 February], transport minister of the UK, Guy Opperman MP, hailed the inaugural year of the Generation Logistics campaign as a transformative force reshaping perceptions of the logistics sector.
He commended the collaborative efforts of businesses and government in altering attitudes towards careers in logistics is crucial for driving economic growth.
At a parliamentary reception celebrating young talents in logistics, minister Opperman underscored the campaign’s pivotal role in raising awareness among the public and youth. He emphasised the campaign’s mission to ensure a steady stream of talent to sustain a resilient supply chain vital for economic prosperity.
“Generation Logistics is revolutionising how we view roles in the logistics sector,” minister Opperman stated. “A robust supply chain is indispensable for economic expansion, and we’re committed to fostering a skilled workforce to keep goods flowing.”
The celebratory event, attended by over 150 representatives from 50 companies and trade associations, marked the campaign’s successful first year. Among the attendees were Generation Logistics ambassadors – youth actively engaging with prospective employees in educational institutions to showcase the sector’s diverse opportunities.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the latest Generation Logistics careers guide aimed at educating teachers and careers advisers about the myriad opportunities within the logistics profession.
Bethany Windsor, programme director for the campaign, highlighted the campaign’s remarkable achievements, with awareness among target audiences increasing by 11% and positive perceptions of the sector soaring by 140% in its inaugural year.
“Logistics remains largely untapped by educators and careers advisers, yet it offers unparalleled opportunities for young professionals at all levels,” Windsor remarked. “In the campaign’s second year, we’re expanding our outreach to educators with the new careers guide and collaborating with STEM Learning to integrate logistics into the curriculum.”
With unwavering support from sponsors and enthusiastic ambassadors, the Generation Logistics campaign aims to elevate logistics as the premier career choice for young people across the economy in 2024 and beyond.
